For a pretty long time i wanted to create a personal portfolio website, to attach it to my CV and have an online presence. About a few months ago i already stumbled upon Hugo, a static site generator written in Go. I was intrigued by the idea of generating a website from markdown files and decided to give it a try.
My First Try #
As i have told you before, the base of the website would be Hugo. So i started looking for themes that i find appealing and i found Gokarna. A basic theme similar to what i use now but still a bit different. I started a new Hugo project, installed the theme and then i was not sure how to create content for my blog in there. I didn’t really wanted to always create new content using the CLI, so i searched for a GUI for Hugo and didn’t find anything useful. So back to thinking about it myself, i just searched for online editors for markdown files and found Wiki.js. A self-hosted wiki software that has a nice markdown editor. I set it up on my server and started writing blog posts in there.
My next thougt was, couldn’t i just connect Wiki.js to my hugo project and have it automatically sync the content? After some research i found out that Wiki.js has a git integration, so i could just connect it to my hugo project’s git repository and have it automatically push the changes. I set it up and it didn’t really work that well, so for now i had a basic webpage and not really a good workflow for creating content.
The Final Approach #
Since i came back from my travels trough Japan and i had no job anymore, i had to apply for jobs. There are many jobs near my but without a good online presence it is hard to get noticed. So i decided to go back to creating a portfolio website. This time i wanted to do it right and wanted to finish a project. I started to look into other Hugo themes and found the one you see right here: Blowfish.
For now it is just the basic setup with a good written About Me page and the blog post you are currently reading. In the future i want to add more content about my projects and experiences. For more information about the webpage follow me to my Project Page: Portfolio Project.
